Charlotte Wilson présente le projet radiophonique "Art, Life, Music" (6 émissions) ainsi :

"Music, art, our beautiful country... and driving. What could be better? Join me on a road trip of New Zealand, visiting some of our finest visual artists at home in their studios. They’ll share their favourite music with us, and I’m hoping to get to the bottom of the mystery of their art, what part music plays in it, and what makes them tick"

Jolis entretiens d'un demi-heure dans les ateliers des peintres où ceux-ci (celles-ci = 2/3) évoquent la musique qui les accompagne en lien avec leur art et leur rythme de vie. Charlotte Wilson mène les entretiens avec beaucoup de sensibilité, on sait qu'il n'y aura aucune faute de goût ou de tact (alors qu'à FC...).

L'artiste Kim Pieters *, dans le numéro du 20 novembre 2018 a choisi une pièce du saxophoniste Jeff Henderson, accompagné de Tom Callwood et Mark Sanders : "Beyond Reason".

On la trouve ici en écoute gratuite, à la 5e plage du CD "Beyond Reason".



Les vidéos où apparaît Jeff Henderson sont semble-t-il très rares. L'une d'entre elles sera postée dans le fil approprié, Le coin de l'écoute musicale, elle vaut le déplacement.

Born in Rotorua, now a long-time resident of Dunedin, she popped up in a retrospective in Wellington’s Adam Art Gallery before winning Waikato Museum’s National Contemporary Art Award 2017 for her work The Meaning of Ethics.

Pieters is also a film-maker, a photographer and a musician well known in the experimental scene in Dunedin; she played in a variety of underground bands through the 1990s before creating the Metonymic music label and the music festival Lines of Flight.

Un petit saut vers Radio New Zealand dont l'émission du 21 mars dernier, présentée par Nick Tipping, Inside Out, était consacrée aux "Arts" : ‘Performing Arts’

Art Blakey, Art Farmer, Art Pepper, Art Tatum... for some reason the history of jazz is liberally dotted with guys called Art. Nick examines the phenomenon, and plays tracks by Arts from the 1930s to today.

Les amateurs de percussions apprécieront le 6e morceau diffusé, "A.T.'s Delight".

Ce numéro d'Inside out présente le programme ci-dessous. Un régal et des commentaires éclairants.

Nick looks at the legacy of McCoy Tyner, who played piano in John Coltrane's legendary quartet, and who also forged a significant solo career.

Coltrane said of McCoy's playing, "McCoy Tyner holds down the harmonies, and that allows me to forget them. He’s sort of the one who gives me wings and lets me take off from the ground from time to time.” Tyner's unique style, based on the interval of a fourth, was ambiguous enough to allow Coltrane to head in whatever direction he wanted. His rhythmic drive locked in with Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison to give Coltrane the kind of momentum he required to create a new sound on tunes like 'My Favourite Things' and 'A Love Supreme'.

But McCoy was a leader in his own right, and in this hour Nick plays tracks from Tyner's debut album Inception and the classic The Real McCoy.

Le concert est classiquement divisé en deux parties (deux fichiers non téléchargeables) sans présentation. L'acoustique du lieu se prête à des œuvres de cette envergure (deux chœurs) et la prise de son est sans reproche (Recorded by RNZ Concert Producer: Tim Dodd; Sound engineer: Adrian Hollay).

The first part of Bach's St Matthew Passion covers The Anointment in Bethany, The Last Supper, The Garden of Gethsemane, The Betrayal and Capture.

The second part of Bach's St Matthew Passion covers the trial before Caiaphas and Pilate, Peter's Denial, the Mockery and Flogging, the Crucifixion, the Descent from the Cross, and the Entombment.

Une interprétation de concert très inspirante de Vltava (The Moldau) du compositeur Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884) par l'orchestre de Wellington, direction Marc Taddei, [Recorded by RNZ Concert, 18 October 2018 in Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington].

Bel ensemble de flûtes pour lancer l’œuvre (prise de son vraiment flatteuse pour les instruments) et une interprétation tout en contraste, loin des clichés sirupeux parfois entendus. Une redécouverte grâce au chef Marc Taddei.

The poetic journey of a famous river from its trickling sources through to the mighty capital city and beyond.

Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884) was a nationalist composer from Bohemia, part of what is now the Czech Republic.

‘Ma Vlast’, or 'My Homeland', is a set of six symphonic poems he wrote in the late 1870’s.
‘Vltava’, or ‘The Moldau’ is the second and most well-known of the six, and it describes the sounds of one of Bohemia’s great rivers, starting from two small springs, their unification into one stream (bringing forth Smetana’s most memorable tune), and passing through various landscapes.
There's a forest, a hunting party (listen for the horns), and the scene of a farmer’s wedding celebration, complete with polka.
The day draws to a close, and nymphs appear at the water’s edge and begin to dance. After a while the stream broadens out into a full, fast-flowing river.
Vltava river continues through the dramatic St John’s Rapids, and past the ancient fortress of Vyšerad, then on towards the beautiful capital city of Prague, finally vanishing into the distance.

•      The famous melody on which the piece is based isn’t actually original. Smetana adapted it from an Italian Renaissance tune, La Mantovana, and it’s even been used as the basis for the Israeli National Anthem.
•      Smetana became afflicted with severe tinnitus, leading to deafness. As a result he was not able to hear four of his six 'Ma Vlast' symphonic poems.  
•      Vyšerad castle was something of a symbol of Czech freedom. Fittingly, Smetana himself is buried in a cemetery on the site of that legendary fortress.

Il y a (peut-être) un temps pour être "Rebel Rebel" et un autre pour être "Rebel", plus précisément, Jean-Féry REBEL (1666 - 1647).

De lui était jouée La Fantaisie dans un concert très enlevé du New Zealand Barok le 9 novembre 2019 et donné par RNZ dans "Music Alive", le 5 mai 2020 : NZ Barok - The Enchanted Forest.

C'est fou comme les étrangers aiment la musique baroque française, que l'on pense à l'Américain naturalisé français, William Christie, qui devrait être à l'Académie française depuis longtemps.

Le petit-fils, déjà âgé, d'un naturaliste, George Vernon Hudson (1867-1946) est sur le terrain avec de jeunes entomologistes pour compter les papillons de nuits. Histoire de la transmission d'une vocation du XIXe siècle au XXIe siècle. Il faut entendre la formidable documentariste, Alison Ballance, interviewer de nuit, sur le terrain, des chercheurs et bénévoles de trois générations différentes se référant aux travaux et aux techniques exceptionnelles de collectage et de classement mises en œuvre par un "aïeul" ! L'émission n'est pas seulement scientifique, elle retrace une histoire humaine au service de la préservation et de la transmission du patrimoine naturel.

A century ago, Wellington naturalist George Vernon Hudson collected thousands of moths in the bush next to his home, in what is now Zealandia sanctuary. Now a group of citizen scientists are following in his footsteps, collecting moths to see how the numbers and species of moths have changed over time as the local vegetation has changed.

Training a computer to recognise bird calls turns out to be a thorny mathematical challenge.
Imagine you are in a forest in New Zealand. It’s night. A light wind is rustling through the canopy, and it is raining. Off to the right you can hear the shrill hunting trill of a ruru.

In the distance a pair of North Island brown kiwi are duetting – the higher whistle of the male is answered by the low growl of the female.
You are using sound to identify which birds are calling and you can easily make out the direction the call is coming from. Without you even noticing your brain subtracts the white noise of the wind and rain so you concentrate on the important cues.

Now imagine you are back in your office, you have an acoustic recording of the same night forest and you want to analyse it to find out what species are present and how any there were. How can you do it without having to listen to the entire recording?

Because it turns out that there isn’t a computer programme that can do what we humans can do. And the avian equivalent of the Shazam app that lets you identify any song from just a few seconds of audio doesn’t exist. Yet.
But it’s something that Massey University ecologist Isabel Castro and Victoria University of Wellington mathematician Stephen Marsland would like to create.

Un mathématicien tente de produire un programme permettant d'identifier le son d'un oiseau sur un spectrogramme représentant plusieurs heures d'enregistrement sonore. Un défi technique majeur dont les difficultés (séparation du bruit du vent, de la pluie, d'autres sons d'oiseaux superposés, etc.) sont expliquées en détail.

Un documentaire fascinant, mêlant écologie et ingénierie, sans aucun équivalent sur France Culture qui continue de diffuser depuis Paris des débats d'actualité et de politique à longueur de journée.


Il paraît que la France ne se réduit pas à Paris, particulièrement au XVIe arrondissement, et au département de la Seine-Saint-Denis. Qu'il y a des DOM et des Collectivités territoriales, que la Guyane, par exemple, a un territoire englobant une partie de la forêt amazonienne, qu'il existe un Portail des Outre-mer renvoyant vers des stations de radios.

Pourquoi France Culture Paris ne commande-t-elle pas des documentaires de qualité à des équipes  d'outre-mer pour les diffuser sur les ondes nationales ? Ce qui se fait à Paris aurait-il plus de valeur et d'intérêt que les productions d'autres parties du territoire ? La limitation territoriale de FC à quelques km2 de région parisienne est un affront fait aux talents se trouvant partout en France et qui n'ont pas accès à une diffusion nationale.

Un entretien qui marque : Yasmine Mohammed - escaping Al Queda husband and radical Islam RNZ From Nine To Noon 27 May 2020.

As a teenager, Canadian human rights advocate Yasmine Mohammed was forced into a violent marriage with a man who turned out to be an al-Qaeda operative.
Two decades on, she is the founder of the Free Hearts, Free Minds Foundation which provides psychological support for those living in Muslim-majority countries who are considering leaving Islam. (...)

Si l'on préfère découvrir Yasmine Mohammed en français, lire l'article de Denise Bombardier dans le Journal de Montréal, Une véritable héroïne musulmane canadienne du 12 juin 2021 dont le titre est volontairement trompeur, la première phrase de l'article étant "C’est aujourd’hui une militante laïque".

On écoutera sinon cet entretien de la radio néo-zélandaise dans lequel @YasMohammedxx est invitée à retracer le parcours décrit dans son livre "Dévoilée. Comment les libéraux occidentaux renforcent l’islam radical". C'est plus qu'un témoignage personnel, c’est une réflexion étayée, que la journaliste essaie d'ailleurs de contrer tout au long de l'interview (voir deux passages significatifs aux 11e et 19e minutes) en relativisant la problématique à travers une classique et attendue mise sur le même plan de l'islam et du christianisme (à chaque pays sa Gesbert...).  C'est peu de dire que Yasmine Mohammed lui cloue le bec avec des arguments solides tirés de son expérience et de ses études. Reste que le descriptif de l'émission, notamment sa fin, ne reflète pas véritablement l'essentiel des propos sans concessions woke de la Canadienne. Un exemple : le passage crucial, où son destin bascule quand elle apprend, en Égypte, que sa petite fille devra subir une mutilation génitale, est laissé dans l'ombre. Quant aux propos reproduits à la fin du descriptif, ils sont comme appelés par la journaliste et sortis du contexte. Une quasi illustration de ce que Yasmine Mohammed dénonce dans l'entretien. Ironique.
